I Switched From ChatGPT to Claude for Client Work — Here's What Actually Changed

By Bijan Stephens April 28, 2026 5 min read

I used ChatGPT for almost everything when I started doing client work. It was fine. Then I switched to Claude for a 90-day run and kept a list of what changed. This post is that list.

I'm not here to tell you Claude is better. I'm telling you it's better at specific things. And if those specific things are the ones your business actually needs, $20 on the wrong tool is a real cost.

Where Claude Wins

1. Writing quality — especially for client-facing content.

This one isn't close. When I give both tools the same prompt — write a follow-up email to a prospect who went quiet, match this tone, hit these points — Claude's output requires significantly less editing. It doesn't over-explain. It doesn't add filler bullet points nobody asked for. It sounds like a person wrote it.

If you're producing proposals, client emails, service descriptions, or anything that represents your business to the outside world, the quality difference is worth the price of admission alone.

2. Claude Projects — the feature most people haven't tried.

Claude Projects explained simply: You create a "Project," upload your documents once — your style guide, your SOPs, background on a specific client — and every conversation inside that project has access to them automatically. You don't re-paste your context every time. You just ask your question.

I have a project for my consulting work that includes my writing style guide, my standard service descriptions, and a short client brief for each active engagement. Claude knows all of it every time I open a conversation. That's not a small thing when you're doing this work every day.

3. Following complex, multi-step instructions without drifting.

Give ChatGPT a prompt with six specific requirements and it will usually nail four of them while quietly ignoring two. Claude holds the full instruction set better. For complex deliverables — restructure this document, maintain this voice, reorganize the sections in this order, keep this section verbatim — it tracks everything more reliably.

Where ChatGPT Wins

1. Real-time web search. Claude does not have live web search built into the standard interface. ChatGPT does. If you need current information — today's prices, recent news about a vendor, whether a specific regulation just changed — ChatGPT is the right tool.

2. Voice mode. ChatGPT's voice mode is genuinely useful for hands-free brainstorming. Driving between job sites and want to think through a pricing proposal? Talk through it. This feature alone is worth considering if you're frequently away from a keyboard.

3. Custom GPTs and integrations. The ChatGPT ecosystem is much larger. There are thousands of custom GPTs built for specific industries. Connections to Zapier, Make, and other automation platforms are more mature. If you're building workflows, ChatGPT has more to plug into.

4. Memory across conversations. ChatGPT remembers things about you across sessions — your business, your preferences, how you like responses formatted. Claude's Projects feature partially addresses this, but ChatGPT's persistent memory is more automatic and more broad.

The Verdict

"Use Claude if writing quality and consistency are your bottleneck. Use ChatGPT if you need real-time information and flexibility. Don't use both until you've genuinely maxed out one."

For most small business owners who are primarily using AI to write things — emails, proposals, social posts, client communications — Claude will produce noticeably better results and the Projects feature will save real time.

For small business owners who are doing more research, working with real-time data, or building any kind of automation — start with ChatGPT.

Pick your tool. Commit to it. Build the habit first. Then optimize.
